Magna And Nvidia Partner On Tech For Vehicles To Behave More Like Humans
Magna and Nvidia Partner to Enhance Vehicle Safety and Self-Driving Systems with AI Technology
Partnership Aims to Boost Accuracy and Speed of On-Board Safety and Self-Driving Systems
Major automotive supplier Magna International and technology giant Nvidia have reached a deal to combine their technologies to improve the accuracy and speed of on-board safety and self-driving systems. The partnership aims to make vehicles behave in a way that is as good as or even better than a human driver.
Combining Forces to Shape the Future of Mobility
According to Steven Jenkins, Vice President of Technology Strategy at Magna Electronics, "Our goal is to make sure that the car behaves in the same way as you would expect from a human driver, in fact, better." The partnership is part of Nvidia’s efforts to bring its safety-certified in-vehicle accelerated compute and AI to the transportation industry.
Nvidia’s Drive AGX Platform
Nvidia’s Drive AGX platform features the Thor system-on-a-chip, which runs the safety-certified DriveOS operating system and is built on the Blackwell GPU architecture. The platform delivers up to 1,000 trillion operations per second of AI compute power, featuring 8-bit floating point support optimized for transformer models, large language models, and generative AI workloads.
Improved Performance and Scalability
The integration of the Drive AGX platform into Magna’s next-generation advanced technology solutions will significantly improve performance, efficiency, and scalability. According to Jenkins, "What it really means is you can process the world around you in a much better way, with much more responsiveness, much more perception, much more ability to do things."
Human-Like Performance
The goal is to achieve human-like or better performance, as described by Jenkins. "What that really means is you shouldn’t feel that you’re in a car and you’re having someone drive you… It will be as robust as a person."
Next Steps
The next step is to develop a working demonstration model of the platform, which is expected to arrive during the fourth quarter of this year. While the names of specific automakers that are likely to become customers for the new combined platform are under wraps, "we have a lot of customer interest," says Jenkins.
Conclusion
The partnership between Magna and Nvidia has the potential to revolutionize the automotive industry by providing a more accurate and efficient way to implement safety and self-driving systems. With the combined power of their technologies, the future of mobility is looking more promising than ever.
