How One Sabbatical Changed Everything for Charles Achampong

Charles Achampong spent over twenty years building a successful career across government, philanthropy, and business. By all external measures, he was thriving. However,  somewhere along the way, he realized he was operating on autopilot, checking boxes, chasing validation, and calling it success.

“I wasn’t burned out,” he said, “I was just absent from my own life. Pressing pause gave me a way back.”

The moment that changed everything wasn’t a promotion or a milestone. It was a pause. How one sabbatical changed everything for Charles is a story of clarity and reconnection. He and his wife took their daughters on a journey around the world—eight countries, four continents in under a year—and made a commitment to be fully present and live differently.

That journey gave him more than rest. It gave him clarity.

“It reconnected us as a family, helped me slow down long enough to listen to my own voice again, and sparked a calling I couldn’t ignore.”

Now, Charles is a speaker, author, and Executive in Residence at Capacity Canada. Through his keynote talks and workshops, he teaches ambitious professionals how to build powerful pauses into their day so they can stop living on empty and start living fully.

Choosing Purpose over Performance

Charles didn’t leave his career behind. He chose to redefine it, moving away from the traditional path toward one that felt true to him.

“On paper I was thriving, new roles, exciting projects and constant movement,” he explained. “But that was the problem: I was mistaking motion for meaning. Every time I checked a box, I felt accomplished for a moment, but it never added up to something deeper.”

For most of his career, he introduced himself with a list of roles and accomplishments. Everything changed when he started introducing himself with his story instead.

As Charles opened up about his own experiences, he noticed others leaning in and doing the same.

Making the Mess Part of the Message

The more Charles embraced his truth, the more he noticed a deeper shift happening, not just in himself, but in the audiences he spoke to.

“There’s a quiet shift happening,” he says. “People are tired of the spin. They want honesty. They want presence. They want real.”

In a world full of highlight reels and hustle, Charles believes what people are craving is something simpler: genuine connection.

“The next generation of leaders won’t win by volume, they’ll win by authenticity.”

Redefining Impact

Charles’s goal isn’t to just motivate, it’s to spark change. Not the kind that fades after a feel-good event, but the kind that lingers.
“I want the high achiever to know they can take a breath. The parent to know that presence matters more than perfection. The leader to know that pausing is powerful, not passive,” he says.

“If my work helps even one person reflect on what brings them joy and take a step toward living it, then I’ve made an impact.”

His definition of success has shifted. It’s no longer about momentum, it’s about meaning.

Grounded in Community

Even with a global outlook, Charles Achampong stays deeply rooted in local impact. Every other Friday, he spends time reading with first and second graders in his community.

“Just sitting side by side and helping them sound out words, laugh at stories, and celebrate little wins,” he says.

Recently, he stepped back from a nonprofit board to make more space for this grassroots work.

“For me, it’s foundational work and it brings me a kind of joy that feels rare and lasting.,” he says.

Advice for the Next Generation

When asked what advice he’d give to someone starting in his field, Charles is clear:

“Start where you are. Speak from what you know,” he says. “Don’t wait until you have it all figured out because no one does.”

He urges aspiring speakers and thought leaders to be patient with their progress and bold with their vision.

“The world doesn’t need more perfect speakers,” he adds. “It needs more honest ones, people willing to show up, speak up, and tell the truth as they see it.”

The Power of the Pause

For Charles, the stage isn’t about spotlight, it’s about creating space. Every keynote, every story, every pause is an invitation for people to reconnect with themselves and consider what truly matters.

“The most meaningful moments aren’t when the applause is loudest,” he says. “They’re when someone comes up afterward and says, ‘That made me see things differently.’ That’s when I know the message landed.”

Because real change doesn’t start on the stage, it starts in the reflections that stay with people long after they’ve left the room.

A Legacy of Meaning

Looking ahead, Charles is focused on getting on stages and sharing his message with the widest audiences possible. His passion is creating moments that spark honest conversations and invite people to pause.

“I’m not interested in doing more for the sake of it,” he says. “What matters to me is creating moments that help people slow down, see more clearly, and walk away with something real they can carry into their lives and work.”

And it all started with one brave decision: to hit pause.
