Pfizer, Moderna shares fall on Trump child Covid shot report

Covid Vaccine Safety Concerns Spark Stock Market Volatility

A recent report from the Washington Post has sparked concerns over the safety of Covid vaccines, particularly with regards to pediatric populations. The report claims that Trump administration health officials plan to link Covid vaccines to the deaths of 25 children, which has led to a decline in stock prices for vaccine manufacturers such as Pfizer and Moderna.

The claim appears to be based on information submitted to the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which monitors the safety of shots approved or authorized by the Food and Drug Administration. However, it’s essential to note that the VAERS system contains unverified reports of side effects, and only scientists and public health officials can determine whether a vaccine caused or contributed to a side effect after thorough investigation.

Vaccine Safety and Efficacy

Numerous studies have consistently demonstrated that Covid vaccines, including those using mRNA technology, are safe and effective. Serious side effects have been extremely rare, and global surveillance data continues to show that the benefits of Covid vaccination outweigh the risks in pediatric populations. Researchers have noted an elevated but rare risk of myocarditis, or inflamed heart muscle, in young men, but there is no evidence to suggest that the vaccines in use now cause any other major safety risks, including pediatric deaths.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a key vaccine panel that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, plays a critical role in determining vaccine access and reviews immunization data to make recommendations on who is eligible for shots and whether insurers should cover them. The committee’s review process is ongoing, and the presentation to the panel is not final, according to the Washington Post.

Regulatory Response and Investigation

The FDA and CDC staff routinely analyze VAERS and other safety monitoring data, and those reviews are being shared publicly through the established ACIP process. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary has stated that the agency is conducting an “intense investigation” into whether Covid shots have caused deaths in children, but has not shared specific data linking pediatric deaths to the vaccine. The FDA plans to release a report in the coming weeks, which will provide further insight into the investigation.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has recently moved to change vaccine policy in the U.S., dropping Covid shot recommendations for healthy kids and pregnant women and setting new limits on the approval of new jabs against the virus. Moderna has stated that the safety of its vaccine is “rigorously monitored” by the company, the FDA, and regulators in over 90 countries, and that systems across the U.S., Australia, Canada, and Europe have not identified any new or undisclosed safety concerns in children or pregnant women.
