Fire and Ash’ tops $12 million in Thursday previews
Avatar: Fire and Ash Ignites the Box Office with $12 Million in Early Preview Screenings
The latest installment in the Avatar franchise, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” has gotten off to a strong start, raking in $12 million in early preview screenings domestically. This figure, although lower than its predecessor’s, has box office analysts predicting a successful opening weekend with expected earnings of at least $100 million in the U.S. and Canada.
The film’s performance is crucial, especially with the year drawing to a close. According to Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, the movie’s results will significantly impact the annual box office totals. The international market has already shown promising signs, with $43.1 million collected in preview screenings, excluding China.
A Unique Franchise with Enduring Appeal
Despite not achieving the same level of cultural relevance as “Star Wars” or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Avatar franchise has consistently delivered impressive box office numbers. The first film, released in 2009, and its sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” have both surpassed $2 billion in global ticket sales, with the original nearing $3 billion. This success can be attributed to the “James Cameron factor,” which promises audiences grand visuals, sound, and storytelling that meet or exceed expectations.
The sale of premium large format tickets for screens like IMAX and Dolby, as well as 3D showings, has been a significant driver of the franchise’s strong box office performance. Although 3D films have fallen out of favor domestically, they remain popular internationally, particularly in China, where the original “Avatar” made a substantial portion of its money.
A Global Phenomenon with a Long Runway
The international appeal of the Avatar franchise is undeniable, with the majority of its earnings coming from outside the U.S. The film’s success in China, where it is expected to have a strong opening day, will be a crucial factor in its overall performance. With premium screens booked into the new year and a loyal fan base, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is poised for a successful run, even if its opening weekend numbers are lower than expected.
As the film industry continues to evolve, the Avatar franchise remains a unique entity, driven by its groundbreaking visuals and immersive cinematic experience. With its enduring appeal and loyal fan base, it is likely to remain a major player in the global box office for years to come.
