8 Values That Are Redefining The Workplace Of The Late 2020s
Redefining Work and AI: The Future of the Workplace
The concept of work is undergoing a significant transformation, driven in part by the increasing presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace. As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into various industries, it’s essential to consider the human element and how it will impact the workforce. A recent report by Manpower Group, based on surveys of over 12,000 workers and 40,000 employers across 41 countries, provides valuable insights into the future of work and the role of AI.
From Automation to Augmentation
The report suggests that the era of simply automating tasks without considering the human element is coming to an end. Instead, companies are shifting towards a more nuanced approach, where AI is used to augment human capabilities, rather than replace them. This approach recognizes that while AI can excel in certain tasks, human judgment and oversight are still essential. By combining the strengths of both humans and machines, businesses can create more efficient and effective workflows.
The Changing Nature of Work
The report highlights several key trends that are shaping the future of work. These include a shift towards skills-based hiring, with the employment gap between degree and non-degree holders narrowing to its lowest point in 30 years. Additionally, the rise of gig work and alternative career paths is becoming more prevalent, with at least 27% of Gen Z workers already supplementing their primary income with part-time or gig work. By 2027, up to half of the workforce in developed countries may be engaged in gig work.
Key Trends Shaping the Future of Work
Some of the key trends identified in the report include the need for targeted task automation, rather than indiscriminate AI use. This involves breaking down traditional jobs into value-added parts and assigning them to human and AI partners. Another trend is the importance of AI augmentation, where humans work alongside AI agents to achieve common goals. Long-term thinking is also crucial, as companies recognize that blunt-force automation strategies can backfire and lead to rehiring employees.
Upskilling and Reskilling
The report emphasizes the need for workers to continually develop new skills to keep pace with AI integration. This includes acquiring AI literacy, as well as skills such as prompt engineering, critical analysis, and ethical deployment of AI-based workflows. However, the report notes that fewer than half of workers have received skills training in the past six months, highlighting the need for more comprehensive upskilling and reskilling programs.
Rethinking Reward Systems
Finally, the report suggests that traditional reward systems need to be redesigned to recognize and incentivize concrete contributions to the organization, rather than just measuring productivity. This includes recognizing the value of soft skills, such as problem-solving, cognitive flexibility, and empathy, which are becoming increasingly important in the modern workforce. By adopting a more holistic approach to work and AI, businesses can create a more effective, efficient, and sustainable workforce for the future.
