A Day of Infamy: The Impact of 9/11 on Marsh & McLennan Companies
The Tragedy Unfolds
On September 11, 2001, Marsh & McLennan Companies had 1,908 people working in or visiting our offices in the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Eight hundred forty-five worked on floors 93 to 100 of One World Trade Center—the floors directly in the path of the first hijacked airliner to hit the buildings. Nine hundred thirty-four worked in the second tower, on floors 48 through 54. One hundred twenty-nine visiting from other offices had meetings scheduled in the buildings. We also had an employee who was a passenger on one of the planes.
The Human Toll
These are facts I can tell you with certainty; we have lived with them day and night ever since. What I cannot do is convey the grief we felt that day and the loss that stays with us. The trauma of that day is still felt by our employees, our families, and the entire company.
The Aftermath
The events of 9/11 had a profound impact on our company. We lost 669 employees and contractors, many of whom were among the 2,753 people killed in the World Trade Center attacks. The day also changed the way we operate, with new security measures in place and a re-evaluation of our business travel policies.
A New Normal
The days and weeks that followed were a blur of shock, grief, and chaos. We worked tirelessly to account for our missing employees, provide support to those affected, and ensure the continuity of our business operations. It was a difficult and trying time, but our employees rose to the challenge, demonstrating resilience, compassion, and a commitment to our values.
Conclusion
The memory of that day will always be with us. We will never forget the lives lost, the families affected, and the colleagues who were taken from us. We will continue to honor their memory by living our values, supporting one another, and carrying out our mission with purpose and dedication.
