AI Delivers The Missing Piece Of Education — Highly Personalized Tutoring For All

Revolutionizing Education with Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is transforming the educational landscape, and its impact is only just beginning to be felt. One of the most significant challenges in both online and traditional learning has been the lack of personalized tutoring, but AI is now capable of filling this gap. The mass education system, which was developed during the industrial age, enabled learning on an unprecedented scale, and online delivery has further expanded access to education worldwide. However, when students struggle to keep up, there have been limited resources available to support them, aside from expensive in-person tutoring.

The Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization founded by Sal Khan, is at the forefront of this revolution. Khan recently outlined his organization’s plans to integrate AI into its vast library of online lessons, providing the missing element of personalized tutoring. The Khan Academy has launched Khanmigo, an AI-powered teaching assistant that offers personalized support to students and fosters engagement through interactive activities. With over 10,000 video lessons covering a range of subjects, including mathematics, sciences, literature, history, and computer science, the Khan Academy has become a free educational resource for students and teachers across 190 countries and 55 languages.

The Evolution of the Khan Academy

The Khan Academy’s journey began with Sal Khan creating YouTube videos to tutor his niece and cousins. From these humble beginnings, the organization has grown into a global phenomenon, with a reported $128 million in revenues in the most recent fiscal year, primarily from donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals. The Khan Academy serves as a supplement to the traditional educational system, and studies have shown that students who spend just 30 minutes a week on its videos can achieve 20% more proficiency. Furthermore, when students learn two to three Khan Academy skills each week throughout the school year, their overall learning can increase by about 30%.

Sal Khan emphasized the importance of leveraging AI to take learning to the next level, providing “personalized attention delivered the way a tutor would.” He acknowledged that it is not feasible to provide every student with their own one-to-one tutor, but with AI, this level of personalized support can be delivered in most students’ native languages. Khan sees this as a highly positive use case for AI, with far-reaching benefits, and encourages people to learn from AI rather than fearing it.

Addressing Concerns and Implementing AI Ethically

Khan recognizes that there are valid concerns about AI, such as cheating, but he believes that these concerns can be addressed through the development of ethical AI systems. For instance, the AI engine within Khanmigo does not simply provide answers to students’ queries but instead guides them through problems and solicits their observations. If a student asks for the answer, the AI engine will not provide it, and if a student makes a mistake, the AI will respond by asking them to explain their thought process. Additionally, the Khan Academy is working to prevent cheating on essay questions by incorporating writing assignments that must be completed in class.

Khan’s vision is to create a future where students and employees are not only familiar with AI tools but also eager to learn about them. By harnessing the power of AI in education, we can create a more personalized, effective, and engaging learning experience for students worldwide. As the Khan Academy continues to evolve and expand its offerings, it is clear that AI will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of education.
