Copy And Paste Cybersecurity Warning — 99% Of Enterprises Now At Risk

The humble copy and paste function, a staple of modern computing, has been revealed to be a significant cybersecurity risk. According to a recent warning from security experts at LayerX, the act of copying and pasting sensitive data can be a major vulnerability, allowing cybercriminals to steal valuable information. This may come as a surprise to many, as other threats like credential theft, zero-day exploits, and phishing are often considered more pressing concerns.

However, the LayerX research report highlights the importance of data loss protection, particularly when it comes to the uploading and sharing of files. The report notes that 38% of users upload files to file-sharing platforms, with 41% of these files containing personally identifiable information or payment card industry data. But what’s even more alarming is that the majority of sensitive data is now leaving enterprises through the clipboard, courtesy of the copy and paste function.

The numbers are stark: 77% of employees copy and paste data into AI tools, while 46% do so into file storage, followed by chat applications. This poses a significant risk, as fileless data-aware movements can bypass traditional file-centric protections. The LayerX CEO, Or Eshed, warns that pasting into business-critical apps carries outsized risks due to the nature of the data involved. This is a wake-up call for individuals and organizations to be more mindful of their copy and paste habits.

Web browser extensions are also implicated in this cybersecurity risk. With 99% of enterprise users having at least one extension installed, and over half having high or critical permissions, the potential for exploitation is significant. Many of these extensions operate with near-system-level access to cookies, session tokens, and tabs, allowing attackers to silently bypass traditional perimeter controls. This creates a massive cybersecurity blind spot, making it essential to think twice before installing browser extensions and using the copy and paste function.

In today’s digital landscape, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential risks associated with everyday actions like copy and paste. By being more mindful of our online habits and taking steps to mitigate these risks, we can help protect ourselves and our organizations from the ever-present threat of cybercriminals. As the LayerX report highlights, it’s time to think twice before hitting Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, and to consider the potential consequences of our actions in the digital realm.
