New Research Suggests Reframing Women’s Underrepresentation in Politics as Men’s Overrepresentation

Study Highlights Impact of Framing on Public Attitudes

It’s well-known that women are underrepresented in political leadership. Now, a new study highlights how we frame this problem can impact public attitudes. Women who became angry after reading about men’s overrepresentation wrote longer letters to their Congressional representatives. These women also showed greater interest in reading about strategies to reduce gender inequality and expressed stronger intentions to donate to related programs.

The research also revealed some limitations to the men’s overrepresentation framing. While it increased women’s anger at political disparities, it had no impact on men’s reactions. Men “did not seem to show a change in anger at the gender gap across framing conditions, perhaps because they defensively downplayed the existence of bias and discrimination when reminded that their group was overrepresented in leadership,” the researchers write in the paper.

People may also believe it’s more important for political leadership to reflect the demographic makeup of society. Finally, the researchers note that gender gaps in political leadership may seem more changeable, explaining in the paper, “Political leadership is elected by constituents, whereas business leadership is typically appointed by boards of a select few individuals.”

By close of business Wednesday, diversity, equity and inclusion offices within the federal government will be shut down. And all federal employees assigned to these DEI offices will have their email access suspended and be placed on paid leave. These employees’ status will remain until such time as the Trump administration makes decisions regarding layoffs and alternative placements.

Suspending Email Access May Seem Disciplinary

One of the key points of communication that department heads will have with DEI employees is to tell them that these actions are not disciplinary. They may not be intended as disciplinary but by suspending access to email accounts, it will certainly feel that way.

By Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 5 p.m. EST—Government Heads Must:

  1. Distribute a department or agency-wide notice informing everyone that all DEI offices are closing.

  3. Notify all DEI employees that they will be placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately.

  2. Provide OPM with a listing of all DEI offices and the names of all employees within those offices.

By Friday, January 31, 2025, by 5 p.m. EST—Government Heads Must:

Wednesday will likely be very challenging for many executives, supervisors and managers as they have dual duty with managing what’s sure to be a chaotic change process.
