‘I don’t like what I’m seeing’
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon Criticizes Trump’s Immigration Approach
Jamie Dimon, the chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co., recently expressed his disagreement with President Donald Trump’s approach to immigration. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Dimon praised Trump’s efforts to secure the US-Mexico border, noting that illegal crossings have fallen to their lowest level in 50 years. However, he also criticized the manner in which immigration policies are being enforced, particularly with regards to the treatment of undocumented immigrants.
Dimon’s comments came as a rare public rebuke from a US corporate leader of one of Trump’s signature policies. The JPMorgan Chase CEO has long advocated for immigration reform to boost US economic growth, and has supported a merit-based system for green cards and citizenship for people brought to America as children. He has also pushed back on proposals to limit H-1B visas, which allow US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations.
Concerns Over ICE Enforcement
Dimon’s criticism of Trump’s immigration approach was sparked by videos of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers rounding up people alleged to be undocumented immigrants. He expressed concern over the manner in which these operations are being carried out, stating that he did not like what he was seeing and that the US should “calm down a little bit” on internal anger about immigration. Dimon also questioned the targeting of certain individuals, asking whether they were in the US legally, if they were criminals, and if they had broken American law.
The JPMorgan Chase CEO emphasized the importance of treating undocumented immigrants with respect and dignity, noting that they are often hardworking individuals who contribute to the US economy. He urged Trump to allow citizenship for these individuals and to provide proper asylum opportunities, stating that the president has the ability to control the borders while also being compassionate.
A Climate of Fear Among CEOs
Dimon’s comments were notable not only for their criticism of Trump’s immigration policies but also for their rarity. Many US CEOs have been reluctant to speak out against the president’s policies, fearing retribution from the Trump administration. The Economist Editor-in-Chief Zanny Minton Beddoes noted that there is a “climate of fear” in the US, with many business leaders unwilling to criticize the president.
Dimon pushed back against this characterization, stating that he has been outspoken on issues such as Trump’s tariffs, immigration policies, and stance towards European allies. However, his comments highlight the challenges faced by CEOs in speaking out on sensitive topics, and the need for business leaders to balance their responsibilities to their companies with their obligations to speak out on issues of public importance.
