IEEE Milestones At Nokia Bell Labs And For AES At Leuven, Belgium
IEEE Milestones: Celebrating Innovations that Shaped the Modern World
The world’s economy is driven by technology, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has a program that recognizes technical developments of significant importance. The IEEE Milestone program acknowledges innovations that have had a substantial impact on the world, with a minimum of 25 years having passed since their development. Recently, I had the privilege of attending two events that celebrated these milestones: one at Nokia Bell Labs in Murray Hills, New Jersey, and another in Leuven, Belgium, for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) technology.
Nokia Bell Labs: A Hub of Innovation
Nokia Bell Labs has been the birthplace of numerous groundbreaking technologies that have enabled our modern world. On October 21, a celebration was held to commemorate seven new milestones at the lab. These milestones include Super-Resolved Fluorescence Microscopy, Charge-Coupled Device, Fractional Quantum Hall Effect, Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Convolutional Neural Networks, and the development of the BELLMAC-32 Microprocessors. Many of these innovations have led to Nobel Prizes for their inventors, a testament to the lab’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of science and technology.
The event highlighted the significant contributions of Bell Labs to the development of modern technology. With 13 IEEE milestone plaques on display, including the new ones, the lab’s rich history of innovation was on full display. The celebration was a reminder of the importance of preserving the legacy and heritage of our professions, recognizing great achievements, and promoting the impact of engineering on society.
Celebrating AES Encryption in Leuven, Belgium
On November 18, I attended another IEEE milestone event in Leuven, Belgium, to celebrate the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) technology. The event was held at the Auditorium Tweede Hoofdwet, Kasteelpark Arenberg, and was attended by the inventors of Rijndael, which became AES, Vincent Rijmen and Joan Daemen. The new IEEE Engineering Milestone plaque was unveiled, recognizing the significance of AES in modern cryptography.
The event was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of IEEE milestones in general, as well as the specific achievements of the Benelux section and IEEE Region 8. I would like to thank my colleague Luc Claesen for his efforts in planning the celebration and his dedication to IEEE and its milestones. The support from KU Leuven and the presence of the mayor of Leuven, Mohamed Ridouani, added to the significance of the event.
The Importance of Preserving Technological History
IEEE’s commitment to historical stewardship is a strategic pillar of its public mission. The organization works to safeguard the stories, standards, and systems that define the enduring impact of electrical and electronic engineering. By preserving the history of our profession, we can foster innovation, inspire future generations, and ensure the safe, sustainable, and ethical development of technology.
The IEEE Milestone program is funded by donations to the IEEE Foundation, which leverages the generosity of donors to support mission activities, such as the milestone program. The program has dedicated milestones across all 10 IEEE regions, making it one of the organization’s most visible and respected programs. By recognizing innovations that have changed the world, IEEE reinforces its mission to advance technology for humanity.
