Maker Faires Could Help IEEE Create The Future

Empowering the Next Generation of Technologists: My Experience at Maker Faire 2025

As I attended the 2025 Maker Faire in Vallejo, CA, I was struck by the creativity and innovation that surrounded me. The event, which took place on Mare Island, brought together a diverse group of DIY enthusiasts, hobbyists, and professionals from various fields, including robotics, 3D printing, and hacker culture. I had the opportunity to hear Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, talk with Dale Dougherty, the founder of Maker Faire, about the story behind the creation of the Apple I computer.

A Platform for Innovation and Learning

The Maker Faire is a unique platform that provides a space for people of all ages to learn, share, and showcase their projects. From amateur radio operators who are working on supplementing government weather balloon flights to individuals creating amazing props for Halloween, the exhibits were diverse and engaging. I was particularly impressed by the robots on display, including battle-bots that competed against each other in a specially designed arena.

The Importance of STEM and STEAM Education

As the Past President of the IEEE, I have been keenly aware of the need to engage with the next generation of technologists and promote STEM and STEAM education. By participating in events like the Maker Faire, we can inspire young people to pursue careers in technology and provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. The IEEE’s mission to advance technology for the benefit of humanity aligns perfectly with the spirit of the Maker Faire, and I believe that we should be actively involved in such events to promote our values and attract new members.

Learning Opportunities for All

The Maker Faire offers a range of learning opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. From hands-on activities like learning to solder to exhibits showcasing the latest advancements in robotics and 3D printing, there is something for everyone. I was pleased to see that local IEEE sections have been involved in previous Maker Faires, and I hope that we can continue to participate in the future. By doing so, we can provide a platform for young people to learn about technology and develop the skills they need to succeed in their chosen careers.

A Call to Action for the IEEE

As I reflect on my experience at the Maker Faire, I am convinced that the IEEE should be more actively engaged with events like this. By participating in Maker Faires, FIRST robotics, and other STEM and STEAM activities, we can promote our mission, attract new members, and inspire the next generation of technologists. I hope that in the future, we can work together to make this vision a reality and provide more opportunities for young people to learn about technology and develop their skills.
