Massive Powerball jackpot means big boost for DraftKings

The Powerball jackpot has reached a staggering $1.8 billion, making it the second-largest prize in U.S. lottery history. As a result, Powerball fever is sweeping the nation, with many people hoping to strike it rich. The massive jackpot is fueling business for lottery couriers like Jackpocket, which is owned by DraftKings and available in 16 states.

According to DraftKings, 15 million Powerball tickets have been ordered through Jackpocket during this Powerball run, with sales increasing by 130% from Wednesday to Thursday. This significant surge in sales is a testament to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the massive jackpot. Other online lottery sales platforms, such as Lotto.com and Jackpot.com, are also experiencing increased demand.

How Jackpocket Works

Jackpocket operates by allowing customers to purchase lottery tickets through the DraftKings app. The courier then fulfills the order, charging a fee on customer deposits. This model is similar to food delivery services like Uber Eats, where customers can order and pay for their food through an app, and a courier delivers it to their doorstep.

However, not all states allow online or courier sales of lottery tickets. In fact, some states have banned Jackpocket and other couriers from operating due to concerns over the integrity of the lottery system. For example, Texas banned Jackpocket and other couriers earlier this year after a scandal involving a group of lottery ticket buyers who spent $25 million on nearly every number combination possible to win a $95 million jackpot.

The Potential Payout

If someone wins the jackpot, they can expect to receive an estimated $826.4 million one-lump-sum payout. This life-changing amount of money is a significant incentive for people to buy tickets, despite the odds of winning being extremely low. According to the lottery operator, the odds of winning a prize in the Powerball drawing are 1 in 24.9, while the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

DraftKings CEO Jason Robins has expressed disappointment over the ban in Texas, citing the potential revenue that could have been generated. Despite this, DraftKings forecasts that Jackpocket will contribute significantly to the company’s revenue and earnings by 2026. The acquisition of Jackpocket is also expected to provide a boost to DraftKings’ sports betting and iGaming offerings, as customers can be cross-sold to these platforms.

As the Powerball jackpot continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how many people will try their luck and buy tickets. With the odds of winning being so low, it’s essential for players to understand the risks and responsibilities associated with playing the lottery. Nevertheless, the potential payout is a significant draw, and many people will likely continue to buy tickets in the hopes of winning big.
