Nike co-founder Phil Knight to donate $2 billion to OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute
Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, has made a historic donation of $2 billion to the Oregon Health and Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute. This generous gift is the largest donation ever made to a U.S. university, college, or health institution, according to the Knight Foundation. The donation will be used to revolutionize the scientific approach to cancer treatment, research, and patient care outcomes.
The Knight Cancer Institute, which was established with the help of Phil Knight’s previous donations, will use this new funding to shift its focus towards more innovative and effective cancer treatments. The institute will partner with renowned cancer research pioneer Dr. Brian Druker, who has been at the forefront of cancer research for decades. A decade ago, Druker and OHSU launched an ambitious campaign to raise $500 million for cancer research, with the Knights matching the raised amount dollar-for-dollar.
Transforming Cancer Research and Treatment
Phil and Penny Knight expressed their enthusiasm for the potential of this donation to transform the field of cancer research and treatment. In a statement, they said, “We are grateful for the opportunity to invest in the next stage of the Druker-led revolutionary vision of cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, care, and some day, eradication. We couldn’t be more excited about the transformational potential of this work for humanity.” The Knights’ donation is a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact on the world and improving the lives of millions of people affected by cancer.
A Legacy of Philanthropy and Innovation
Phil Knight’s success with Nike, which he founded in 1964, has enabled him to make significant philanthropic contributions over the years. Originally called Blue Ribbon Sports, the company started humbly, with Knight selling sneakers out of the trunk of his car. Today, Nike is one of the most recognizable and dominant brands in the world, with a market value of over $110 billion. The Knights are regularly recognized as one of the top philanthropic couples, with estimated lifetime giving of $3.6 billion, including $370 million donated in 2024 alone.
The Knight Foundation, which was established by Phil and Penny Knight, held more than $5 billion in assets at the end of 2023, according to its latest tax documents. The foundation’s mission is to support innovative and impactful initiatives in education, healthcare, and the arts. With this latest donation, the Knights are once again demonstrating their commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world and leaving a lasting legacy.
