Omada Health to start prescribing GLP-1s, other obesity medications
Omada Health Expands Virtual Care Services with GLP-1 Prescriptions
Omada Health, a virtual care company, has announced plans to start prescribing GLP-1s and other obesity drugs, as well as helping patients manage these medications. This move is part of the company’s efforts to expand its weight management program, which has grown to over 800,000 members. The decision comes as digital health companies are increasingly entering the market for GLP-1s, which are used to treat obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.
A Growing Market for GLP-1s
The market for GLP-1s is expected to be worth around $100 billion by the end of the decade, according to some analysts. Several digital health companies are already offering prescriptions for GLP-1s, and manufacturers such as Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk are working to make their treatments more accessible. Omada Health’s co-founder and CEO, Sean Duffy, believes that access to GLP-1s will grow significantly over time, and the company is positioning itself to support this growth.
Omada’s weight management program aims to support lifestyle and behavioral changes for patients on GLP-1s and other obesity drugs. The program offers nutrition guidance, education, and a team of health coaches and exercise specialists to help patients stay on their medications. With the new offering, Omada will tap into licensed providers trained in obesity care to prescribe medications and help patients manage their treatments.
Supporting Patients Through Treatment
The new offering will allow Omada to support patients throughout their treatment journey, from receiving a prescription to managing potential side effects. GLP-1 injections can be complicated for patients to use properly, and gastrointestinal side effects are common. Omada’s support system will help patients navigate these challenges and stay on their treatments. As Duffy explained, “If you need to go up in dose, down in those, switch medications – you name it. We’ll be able to support you through this experience.”
Omada’s expanded services will also be available as an add-on for customers, including national and regional health plans and employers. The company believes that this new offering will help better support workers’ health needs while controlling costs and improving results from obesity treatments. With its virtual care programs, Omada aims to provide a “between-visit care model” that complements the broader healthcare ecosystem.
