PayPal For Bots? Startup Launches Autonomous Payments For AI Agents
The future of work is rapidly evolving, and artificial intelligence (AI) agents are poised to play a significant role in this transformation. As AI agents become increasingly sophisticated, they will soon be able to hire, fire, and pay other agents, as well as sign up for and provision paid services. This is the vision of InFlow, a startup that has recently launched out of stealth mode. InFlow aims to create an AI-native payment system that will enable AI agents to transact and access services on their own, without the need for human intervention.
According to Jim Nguyen, CEO of InFlow and a former PayPal executive, the current limitation of AI agents is not their intelligence, but rather the lack of a payment system designed to facilitate agentic commerce. Nguyen believes that AI agents are evolving into a new form of teammate, similar to human assistants, and therefore require a budget and the ability to hire other agents with specialized skills. This will enable them to complete tasks more efficiently and effectively. For instance, building a website is a task that AI systems and agents can accomplish, but they are currently limited by their inability to sign up for services, enter payment details, or pay the bill.
InFlow’s solution is to enable agents to embed onboarding and payments inside their workflow, allowing them to create a new account, pay for services, and provision resources without human intervention. This will revolutionize the way AI agents work and interact with humans. As Nguyen notes, “We’re enabling agents to do their jobs, just like human assistants, and to have a budget, just like human assistants.” This development has significant implications for the future of work, as AI agents will be able to work alongside humans, augmenting their capabilities and increasing productivity.
The concept of AI agents as teammates is not new, and several companies, including Braze, HubSpot, Adobe, and Salesforce, are already building agentic platforms. However, the payment layer for agents is still in its infancy, with only a few companies, such as Circuit, Chisel, Masumi, and Tetto, working on this aspect. InFlow’s solution is designed to address this gap and provide a secure and accountable payment system for AI agents. As OpenText CTO Savinay Berry notes, the future of work will require HR-like systems for onboarding, provisioning, paying, firing, and retiring AI agents, and a payments methodology will be essential to make this possible.
InFlow’s approach to accountability is to provide agents with budgets, similar to those given to human assistants or departments, to prevent overspending. Additionally, agents will be formally tied to the person they are working with, allowing for tracing and accountability in case of any issues. This development has the potential to create a new ecosystem of digital and human workers, working together in ways that were previously unimaginable. While some companies, such as Amazon, have expressed concerns about AI agents, Nguyen believes that this is a temporary issue and that AI agents will eventually be recognized as a new type of customer with purchasing power.
As the use of AI agents becomes more widespread, it is essential to consider the implications of this technology on the future of work. With the ability to hire, fire, and pay other agents, AI agents will become an integral part of the workforce, augmenting human capabilities and increasing productivity. The development of a payment system for AI agents, such as InFlow’s, will be crucial in facilitating this transformation and enabling AI agents to reach their full potential. As Nguyen notes, “At the end of the day, it’s a new customer, and they’re a buying customer with earning capabilities, so why not take them?”
