Ram cancels plans for all-electric pickup truck

The automotive industry is undergoing significant changes, with electric vehicles (EVs) playing a crucial role in the transition. However, despite the growing demand for eco-friendly options, some manufacturers are reassessing their strategies. Stellantis, the parent company of Ram, has announced that it is canceling plans to develop a full-size electric Ram 1500 pickup truck. This decision comes as a response to slowing demand for electric vehicles in North America.

The Ram 1500 Revolution battery-electric concept pickup truck was initially introduced during CES 2023, with plans to go on sale by the end of 2024. However, the company has already delayed these plans twice, and now, it has decided to discontinue the development of a full-size battery electric vehicle (BEV) pickup. A company spokesperson stated that this decision is part of a broader reassessment of Stellantis’ product strategy.

Shift in Focus

Although the full-size electric Ram 1500 is no longer in the works, the company still plans to launch an extended-range electric truck. This vehicle will be equipped with an electric generator and a gas engine, providing a compromise between electric and traditional fuel options. The extended-range truck, previously known as the Ramcharger, will now be renamed the Ram 1500 REV and is expected to be released next year.

This change in strategy comes as Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis has launched an aggressive turnaround for the brand. New Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa has also been reviewing and adjusting some of the initiatives implemented by his predecessor, Carlos Tavares. Filosa has pledged to make tough decisions to re-establish profitable growth and improve results.

Industry Trends

The auto industry as a whole is facing slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles. This trend is partly due to the current administration’s efforts to unwind initiatives aimed at promoting the transition to electric vehicles. The cancellation of tax credits for buying EVs has also contributed to the slowing demand. As the industry continues to evolve, manufacturers must adapt their strategies to meet changing market conditions and consumer preferences.

Stellantis’ decision to discontinue the development of a full-size electric Ram 1500 pickup truck reflects the company’s efforts to respond to these changes. By focusing on alternative options, such as the extended-range electric truck, Ram aims to stay competitive in the market while also addressing the shifting demand for electric vehicles.
