The Viral PowerPoint Deck that Changed the Way We Think about Work Culture
Sheryl Sandberg has called it one of the most important documents ever to come out of Silicon Valley. It’s been viewed more than 5 million times on the web. But when Reed Hastings and I (along with some colleagues) wrote a PowerPoint deck explaining how we shaped the culture and motivated performance at Netflix, where Hastings is CEO and I was chief talent officer from 1998 to 2012, we had no idea it would go viral.
A New Approach to Talent Management
We realized that some of the talent management ideas we’d pioneered, such as the concept that workers should be allowed to take whatever vacation time they feel is appropriate, had been seen as a little crazy (at least until other companies started adopting them). But we were surprised that an unadorned set of 127 slides—no music, no animation—would become so influential.
The Power of Candor
One of the key principles we outlined in the deck is the importance of candor. We believe that open and honest communication is essential for creating a positive work environment. We encouraged our employees to speak up and share their thoughts and opinions, and we created a culture where it was safe to do so. This approach has been instrumental in driving innovation and success at Netflix.
A Break from the Standard Playbook
We also challenged some of the traditional approaches to talent management, such as the idea that employees should be judged solely on their performance. We believed that people are more than just their job performance, and that they should be allowed to grow and develop as individuals. This approach has led to a more engaged and motivated workforce, and has contributed to Netflix’s success.
Conclusion
The Netflix culture deck has been a game-changer in the world of work culture and talent management. It has shown that there is a better way to manage people, one that is based on trust, candor, and a willingness to take risks. We hope that our deck will inspire other companies to rethink the way they approach talent management and create a more positive and productive work environment.
