The Technical Leader: Build A Company You Can Love
Building a Company You Love: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Growth
As an entrepreneur, building a company that aligns with your values and passions is a dream shared by many. However, the reality of running a business can be far more complex. When I founded Aepiphanni in 2005, my vision was to support purpose-driven business owners in achieving their full potential. Over the years, I’ve learned that this journey is not just about the company, but also about the personal growth and self-awareness of its leader.
One of the most significant challenges I’ve observed in business owners is the tendency to try to do everything themselves. This can lead to burnout, inefficient growth, and a lack of direction. As a consultant, I’ve worked with numerous clients who have struggled with these issues, and I’ve seen firsthand the importance of recognizing one’s strengths and weaknesses. By acknowledging areas where we need support, we can build a team that complements our skills and helps us achieve our goals.
Evolution and Growth
As my company grew, I realized that delivering consulting services was not enough. I needed to build a team that could execute plans and support our clients in a more comprehensive way. This shift in focus led to a period of significant growth, but it also meant that I had to adapt to a new role. I had to transition from being a hands-on consultant to a leader and manager, responsible for guiding my team and ensuring that our services met the evolving needs of our clients.
This transition was not without its challenges. I had to navigate the complexities of leadership, including hiring, training, and managing a team. I also had to learn to delegate tasks and trust my team to handle responsibilities that I had previously handled myself. However, the benefits of this transition were well worth the effort. Our company was able to expand its services, support more clients, and build a reputation as a trusted advisor in our industry.
Realigning with My Mission
Despite the success of our company, I eventually realized that my role had drifted away from my original mission. I had become more focused on management and leadership than on the consulting work that I loved. This realization led to a period of reflection, during which I reassessed my goals and priorities. I decided to make a change, closing most of my companies and focusing on fractional work, writing, and teaching.
This decision allowed me to realign with my mission and focus on the work that truly fulfilled me. I was able to support clients in a more targeted way, using my expertise to help them achieve their goals. I also had the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with a wider audience, through writing and teaching. This shift has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful to have had the courage to make the change.
Lessons Learned
My journey has taught me the importance of self-awareness and adaptability in business. As entrepreneurs, we must be willing to evolve and grow, both personally and professionally. This means recognizing our strengths and weaknesses, building a team that complements our skills, and being open to new opportunities and challenges. By doing so, we can build companies that truly reflect our values and passions, and that make a meaningful impact in the world.
If you’re an entrepreneur looking to build a company that you love, I encourage you to take a step back and reflect on your goals and priorities. What is your unique contribution to your business? What tasks can you delegate to others, and what support systems do you need to put in place? By answering these questions and being willing to adapt and grow, you can build a company that truly aligns with your vision and values.
