Walmart expands employee discount on groceries
Walmart Expands Employee Discount to Combat Rising Prices
As the US economy grapples with the impact of tariffs on consumer spending, Walmart, the largest private employer in the country, has announced an expansion of its employee discount program. The move aims to help its approximately 1.6 million US employees cope with rising prices, particularly on essential items like groceries. Starting immediately, Walmart employees will receive a 10% discount on nearly all groceries, including milk, meat, and frozen food, after completing their first 90 days with the company.
The decision to expand the discount program comes as economists and companies closely watch the effects of rising tariffs on the US economy. Despite a recent report showing that food prices remained flat, other household items have seen significant price increases. For instance, household furnishings and supplies rose 0.7% month over month, following a 1% increase in June. Walmart’s own CFO, John David Rainey, has warned that higher prices are inevitable, stating that the company is “wired for everyday low prices, but the magnitude of these increases is more than any retailer can absorb.”
A Boost to Employee Morale and Business
The expanded discount program is expected to not only benefit Walmart employees but also boost the company’s own business. By offering a more comprehensive discount, Walmart may encourage its employees to spend more at its stores and website, rather than at competitors. This move could also help attract and retain workers, as the perk is likely to be seen as a valuable benefit. According to Donna Morris, Walmart’s chief people officer, the expanded discount is a response to employee feedback, with many requesting that the benefit be extended to more items.
The announcement was made at Walmart’s holiday meeting in Houston, where all store managers were in attendance. In a surprise move, Walmart US CEO John Furner brought a store manager on stage to read the announcement, highlighting the positive impact it would have on employees. The store manager expressed his gratitude, stating that the discount would help his associates who struggle to make ends meet. As Walmart prepares to report its latest earnings on August 21, the expanded discount program is seen as a strategic move to support both its employees and its business.
