Yelp’s Empirical Approach to Diversity
A Lack of Diversity in the Tech Workforce
Beginning in 2013, a handful of tech companies (including Yelp, where some of us work, Google, LinkedIn, and Facebook) began to research and release data on the diversity of their workforces. The numbers were grim. For instance, in 2014 only 10% of Yelp’s engineers were female. Seven percent of Yelp employees were Hispanic, and 4% were black. These figures were similar at other tech companies, most of which had fewer than 20% of their technical positions filled by women and had low representation of black and Hispanic employees.
The Wake-Up Call
These numbers were a wake-up call for many in the tech industry. Seeing the lack of diversity in their own workforces, companies like Yelp, Google, and others were forced to confront the issue head-on. It became clear that the lack of diversity was not just a problem, but a systemic one that needed to be addressed.
A New Era of Transparency and Accountability
As a result, many tech companies began to release their diversity and inclusion data, making it publicly available for the first time. This marked a significant shift, as companies began to prioritize transparency and accountability in their efforts to increase diversity and inclusion. The numbers were stark, but the data was clear: change was needed.
A Roadmap for Change
Since then, many companies have made significant strides in increasing diversity and inclusion. This has involved a range of initiatives, from recruiting and hiring practices to training and professional development programs. There is still much work to be done, but the progress is undeniable.
Conclusion
The journey to a more diverse and inclusive tech industry is ongoing, but the progress made so far is a testament to the power of transparency, accountability, and collective action. As we continue on this path, it is crucial that we remain committed to creating a more equitable and representative industry, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
