Embracing Responsible AI: A Key to Unlocking Business Growth

A recent PwC survey of 310 business leaders reveals that responsible AI is no longer just a feel-good concept or a means to avoid litigation; it’s a growth strategy that yields tangible outcomes. The majority of respondents, 58%, cite improved return on AI investment, while 58% also credit responsible AI for enhanced customer experience. Furthermore, at least 55% believe it drives innovation, and a similar number see it as a means to bolster cybersecurity and data protection.

Overcoming the Challenges of Scaling Responsible AI

Despite the benefits, scaling responsible AI poses significant challenges. Half of the executives surveyed, 50%, struggle to translate principles into operational processes, and a similar number face cultural resistance to change. Additionally, 38% grapple with limited budgets or resources. To overcome these hurdles, it’s essential to integrate responsible AI into core operations and decision-making, a strategy already adopted by about six in ten respondents, 61%.

Industry experts agree that responsible AI must be an integral part of every AI initiative. As Cindi Howson, chief data and AI strategy officer at ThoughtSpot, aptly puts it, “AI is a business issue – not just an executive talking point. We all have a stake in this revolutionary technology and a shared moral and ethical liability to ensure AI betters humanity.” Achieving this goal requires deep collaboration and a village-like approach that transcends traditional policy-driven methods.

Building a Culture of Responsible AI

Responsible AI begins with employees at all levels. According to Danielle McMahan, chief people officer for Wiley, it’s vital to provide clear expectations and guardrails to guide AI usage and manage risk. This involves gathering internal subject matter experts to drive strategy and develop standards for ethical and responsible AI use. McMahan also emphasizes the importance of training employees to use AI effectively, starting with managers who can provide guidance and support.

Jeremy Ung, chief technology officer at BlackLine, notes that the conversation around AI must shift from capability to trust, which is the primary obstacle to AI agent implementation. In high-stakes environments like finance, where accuracy and audit trails are paramount, agentic AI must be built on a foundation of verifiable, secure, and explainable systems. This includes clean data pipelines, robust APIs, and immutable logs, which are often overlooked but essential for responsible AI.

Ensuring Continuous Innovation and Oversight

The next phase of responsible AI maturity will embrace a continuous innovation mindset, using technology to strengthen oversight while driving progress and performance. As Ramprakash Ramamoorthy, director of AI research at ManageEngine, a division of Zoho Corporation, advises, “Don’t treat governance as an afterthought.” Instead, it should begin with high-quality, unbiased data, explainable models, and auditable workflows, along with human-in-the-loop review for high-impact decisions and continuous drift monitoring once models are deployed.

Ultimately, responsible AI requires a cultural shift that codifies ethics into every product and process that interacts with intelligence. AI ethics committees should be operational, not symbolic, with clear escalation paths when a model’s decision deviates from expected behavior. By prioritizing responsible AI, businesses can unlock its full potential and drive growth while ensuring that this revolutionary technology benefits humanity.
